Tips to make the best of your time on Bruny Island, Tasmania
Here are a few tips regarding traveling to Bruny Island and also on the Bruny Island Ferry. Like the rest of Tasmania the Bruny Island ferry has peak times, such as the Christmas and Easter holidays as well as times like Friday and Sunday afternoons. At these times there can be a long wait to get on to the ferry at Ferry Road at Kettering. Also when you are returning from Bruny Island there is likely to be a long wait during peak times such as Sunday afternoon. So when you are planning your time on Bruny Island you should, if possible, plan to avoid the riding the Bruny Island ferry at peak times. Either that or take a fishing rod with you so you can pass the waiting time fishing from the jetty (the fishing is very good from the Bruny Island jetty, southern calamari and Australian salmon are often caught in good numbers).
Bruny Island at Easter and Christmas
Like most of Tasmania's great holiday destinations Bruny Island is an extremely popular destination at Easter. The big problem with Bruny at Easter and Christmas time is that there is only one Bruny ferry! Whilst the Bruny Island Ferry is more than adequate to service the island's needs for most of the year at Easter (and also to a lesser degree Christmas) the queue of cars waiting to board the ferry is some times in the hundreds. Because I live only five minutes from the ferry I have seen people in cars waiting in the queue for more than four hours. The solution is to plan the time of your arrival and departure outside these peak times.
Choosing the Best Time to Visit Bruny Island
The best bet is to plan your visit to Bruny Island so the times of your arrival and departure are mid-week. Get the early ferry over to Bruny and the late one coming back. A lot of people live over on Bruny and commute to Hobart so avoid times when you will get mixed up in their traffic.
And remember to keep a copy of the Bruny Island ferry's timetable with you. The Bruny ferry captain sticks to the timetable and usually leaves the jetty exactly on time, so if you miss the ferry by a couple of minutes you may have to wait a long time for the next ferry ! Believe me there is nothing more frustrating than driving down the road just in time to see the ferry pull out from the jetty on Bruny Island and knowing you'll have to wait almost two hours for the next one!
Bruny Island Ferry Tickets: You purchase your ferry ticket from a booth in Ferry Road at Kettering before you drive on board the ferry. The ticket booth usually opens about half an hour before the ferry is due to leave. The attendant at the ticket booth will direct you where to line up your car and can also confirm ferry times and expected waiting times if the ferry is busy. Also, available for free when you purchase your ferry ticket, is a handy information brochure on Bruny Island. This brochure has a road map of Bruny and also a copy of the Bruny Island Ferry Timetable printed on the back, so remember to keep it! During peak holiday times, such as Easter and Christmas, the ferry captain will usually continue ferry operations after the last scheduled ferry trip until all the back log of cars is cleared, this might mean the ferry continues to operate until 10 or 11 at night.

Road conditions on Bruny Island
The road from the ferry terminal at Roberts Point to Adventure Bay is a good sealed road except for a short section on The Neck where the penguin colonies are.
The road from the ferry to Cape Bruny Lighthouse is sealed to Allona and then gravel. Generally even the gravel roads are of good quality and well maintained except after a long spell of wet weather after which the gravel roads may get a few pot holes but they are still passable for most two wheel drive cars.
When returning to the Bruny Island ferry consult the ferry timetable and allow some extra driving time as there are occasionally big log trucks and slow caravans on Bruny Island's roads and these may extend the time of your return to the ferry considerably.
The only section of unsealed road between Roberts Point and Adventure Bay is around the Penguin colony shown on the road map between Isthmus Bay and Adventure Bay
Remember to get and keep the brochure with Bruny Island Ferry Timetable the road map of Bruny Island on the back page. Its Free!
